Group 13: API Management & Integration

API lifecycle and system integration: Cloud Endpoints (API gateway), Apigee (full API management), Cloud Tasks (asynchronous task queues), Pub/Sub (messaging), Eventarc (event routing). Focus on API security, rate limiting, monitoring, and service decoupling.

Integration Patterns: Cloud Endpoints for simple API management; Apigee for enterprise API lifecycle; Cloud Tasks for asynchronous processing; Pub/Sub for event-driven architectures; Eventarc for event routing. Consider API complexity and traffic volume.

Services & Integration Patterns

Cloud Endpoints

Pattern: Simple API gateway and management.

Best for: OpenAPI specs, authentication, monitoring, rate limiting for internal APIs.

Features: API keys, JWT validation, quota management, API documentation, logging.

Apigee

Pattern: Enterprise API management platform.

Best for: API monetization, developer portals, advanced analytics, multi-cloud APIs.

Features: API lifecycle, developer portals, analytics, monetization, policy enforcement.

Cloud Tasks

Pattern: Asynchronous task processing.

Best for: Background jobs, reliable task execution, scheduled processing.

Features: HTTP/App Engine targets, retry logic, rate limiting, deduplication.

Pub/Sub

Pattern: Asynchronous messaging and event streaming.

Best for: Service decoupling, event-driven architectures, real-time data processing.

Features: At-least-once delivery, ordering, dead letter queues, push/pull delivery.

Eventarc

Pattern: Event-driven service orchestration.

Best for: Event routing, service triggering, cloud-native event handling.

Features: Cloud Events, service triggers, event filtering, audit trails.

Mathematical Selection Model

Criteria [0..10]. Higher scores indicate better service fit for API and integration needs.

Interpretation Rules

  • Cloud Endpoints > 7.0: Perfect for simple API management with OpenAPI specs and basic authentication.
  • Apigee > 7.0: Essential for enterprise API strategies, developer portals, and API monetization.
  • Cloud Tasks > 7.0: Ideal for reliable asynchronous processing and background job execution.
  • Pub/Sub > 7.0: Must-have for event-driven systems and service decoupling at scale.
  • Eventarc > 7.0: Best for cloud-native event routing and service orchestration.

When NOT to Use API/Integration Services

  • Simple synchronous calls: Use direct HTTP requests for simple, low-latency service-to-service communication.
  • Single-service applications: Don't add integration complexity for monolithic architectures.
  • Real-time bidirectional communication: Consider WebSockets or gRPC streaming for real-time interactions.
  • Batch processing: Use Cloud Storage + scheduled jobs for traditional batch workflows.

Summary

API and integration services enable scalable, maintainable architectures. Choose based on your API complexity, traffic patterns, and integration requirements. Start simple with Cloud Endpoints, scale to Apigee for enterprise needs, and leverage Pub/Sub for event-driven patterns.
